The Supertmatik competition has now been well established in the calendar of the Mathematics department of our school. This international competition is open for students who are good at working mental mathematics in a fast way and thousands of students from around the globe take part. The grand final was planned to be held in April but since schools had to be closed because of Covid, the final was held in October. From October 2019 to February 2020, teachers from the Maths department have prepared a number of students for this competition so that they do well in the grand final. During this period the participating students had to win internal competitions with other students from our schools before competing in the grand final. The following are the results:
Year 9
Nicole Psaila placed 112th from 8,120 students
Year 11
Kyra Cassar placed 42nd from 4,970 students
Silvia Spiteri placed 24th from 4,970 students
Alexander Debono placed 18th from 4,970 students
Year 10
Karmenu Schembri placed 13th from 7,630 students
Katrina Montebello placed 1st from 7,630 students
This was the first time that our school obtained a 1st placing in this competition. Katrina was also the only student this year amongst the Maltese secondary school students who placed among the first ten in any category. Because of her placing, Katrina was also awarded a medal, a T-shirt and some educational games.
Are you good at mental maths? Do you wish to compete in this competition? Talk to the school’s Mathematics Head of Department (HOD) who will show you how to participate.
