Media Literacy Education started being offered as an option at this school in September 2019 and there are already a good number of students who have chosen this subject at both Vocational and Applied levels. We are presently living in a world in which media pervades our daily lives, and often influences the way we live, shapes our ideas and influences our decisions.
Therefore, this subject, particularly the Vocational route, leads students to understand the various aspects relating to media. Students aren’t just taught the theoretical part as they make ample use of the media lab which is set up with all the necessary equipment. Through their work they can unleash their creativity and put the skills they acquire into practice. Whoever chooses the Applied route will obviously be presented with much less theory as the focus is on the practical aspects of the subject.
In Year 9 the main focus is on photography, during Year 10 it shifts onto printing and in Year 11 on videography. In this way, students will have extensive experience in various fields relating to media. This subject opens the students’ minds to analysis, critique and discussion of what the media is feeding us on a daily basis and sometimes we are unaware of all this. It is a subject that helps the students grow not only as regards their artistic abilities but also their intellectual ones. The students also become more creative as can be easily seen through their works in this section.
