Biology is the natural science which studies living things and their interactions with the environment. In biology, we explore the variety and beauty of our living world and try to find out how it all works. We ask and attempt to answer various questions, such as:
- What are living things made of?
- How does our body fight off diseases?
- Why do we resemble our parents?
- Why is smoking harmful?
In year 9 we focus on the diversity of life, and we examine the characteristics of living things and the different forms of life. In years 10 and 11 we focus on human biology and study various body systems. These include the digestive system, the circulatory system, and the brain and the nervous system. Throughout the three years, we carry out at least 15 practical sessions and a number of fieldworks and site visits.
As a prospective biology student, you should have a keen interest in the sciences and be curious about the living word and how it works. You might also be interested in pursuing a career which requires biology as a school subject. You are also required to have obtained a good mark in year 7 and 8 integrated science, the ability to read, write and work in English, and the will to study and work hard.
Biology opens a variety of career opportunities. These include medicine and healthcare, science education, psychology, pharmaceuticals, nutrition, and environment and agriculture.
