Ben’s kitchen, our healthy eating canteen at St Benedict College Secondary School, kicked off when a group of teachers felt the need to offer healthy snacks and drinks to the students and staff during their break. A small room was changed into a domestic kitchen where food items were freshly prepared daily by staff members who generously offered to give a helping hand during some of their free time.
Over the years, equipment was bought to improve the quality and variety of the menu, but the greatest change occurred when the school was sponsored to have its own state-of-the-art, industrial kitchen. Since then it was easier to prepare tasty, healthy meals for everyone on the premises. The area was completely refurbished and embellished, and our students had the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant dining area during their break time.
In 2019 we introduced the idea of involving parents in the daily running of the canteen. A group of four parents offered to give a helping hand on a roster basis. This enabled us to improve the service and quality of food served. Besides, it served as an opportunity to enhance our school ethos where parental involvement ranks high on the priority list.
