The Health and Safety department was established in the school since its opening in 2005. One of the main aims of the department is to disseminate information about health and safety issues amongst all stakeholders with particular focus on the students. This is done through various means including lessons with particular groups of students, dissemination of information through video clips and articles, and also the organisations of short courses and talks. Last year the department organised basic life support courses for all students in the school which included both theory and practice.
The health and safety department also organises one fire drill per term. In preparation for this, students are reminded of the fire drill procedures, in particular, the year 9 students who are new to the school. School staff is regularly updated on the procedures, and meetings are held for NQTs and new members of staff. Our department keeps updated records of students’ medical conditions and a list of serious allergies which have to be consulted when the need arises.
Every year the department coordinates the distribution of vaccines to year 10 students, hair screening for all students, and other tests that crop up from time to time as requested by the Health Department.
Every year we ensure that fire extinguishers are serviced and changed when necessary. Pest control checks are done twice a year, while the water system in the school is checked against Legionella growths. There is an AED in the school foyer which is also serviced regularly to be used in an emergency.
The health and safety teachers are also qualified first aiders who receive regular training in first aid, the use of the AED and administration of medication in serious cases. First aid boxes and supplies are replenished regularly, and first aid is offered to all students when needed.
